Science cannot start from nowhere and progress from there. There should be some base or belief which gives the initiation. For scientific community, such basis or initiation is provided by a set of shared beliefs. People may think that science always tries to explore something unknown . Kuhn opines that scientific community depends more on shared thought than on individual commitment to science to continue their scientific activity. These shared thoughts survive as long as they are not challenged and replaced by new ones. These new assumptions are called by Kuhn as ‘paradigms’. Kuhn opines that the concept of paradigm lays foundation for development of Science. 

Kuhn defines Normal Science as research based on some past scientific achievements, which are reliable and can be considered as foundations for further research. The peculiarity of these past achievements is that they are skeletal solutions to certain phenomena. As such, they are open and leave a lot of scope for new entrants to conduct further research and come out with new findings and try to become members of scientific community.

But there is one flaw in this process. The students aspiring and doing research emerge from the same school of thought that subscribed to the already established scientific achievements . They are prisoners of the framework of the paradigms while their predecessors established as such there won’t be any novelty in their research. They will be doing such a research where any doubt they get is easily answered by the paradigm to which they subscribed. In a way their research is a structured one, to which answers are provided by their own paradigms .

When most of the research is thus in a structured frame, how is it possible for a paradigm to be created or born? The birth of paradigm starts with collection of some facts. These facts become the subjects of varied interpretations by different groups. There is competition among the groups for sometime for gaining ascendancy for their interpretation over that of others. After sometime, all the interpretations receive a winner and a paradigm is born in that winner. Such a paradigm is not supreme in the sense that it shows solutions to all data collected. But it offers better solutions than other competing theories. It leaves enough scope for research to improve it if necessary.  As the paradigm grows in popularity, it attracts more and more supporters. It becomes focus of discussion for specialized journal and professional academician’s .Interaction among its protagonists intensifies and the birth of a paradigm is complete.
